Alexander Rastorguev was born in 1971 in Rostov-upon-Don, Russia, where he studied philology at the State University. In 1998 he graduated from the St. Petersburg State Theatre Arts Academy. His documentary “Good Bye, Boys” was recognized as the best debut film of 1997. His film “Maundy Thursday” (2002) won the "MDR-Film-Preis" prize at the 46th International Leipzig Festival for Documentary and Animated Film and was recognized as Best Eastern-European Documentary film as well as got the prize from the Ecumenical Jury and won Grand Prix at the 26th International Festival “Real Cinema” in Paris. By request of the First Russian TV channel ORT Alexander Rastorguev made his film “Contract” in 2002, and in 2006 his new film “Tender’s Heat. Wild, wild beach” was finished. It was granted with a number of prizes, among which are - "LAVR" (2006), a National Prize for Best Non-Fiction film - White Elephant (2006), the prize awarded by the domestic film critic guild, and the Golden Eagle for Best Documentary film - special prize from the IDFA Jury. “A couple of years ago I saw an outstanding picture. Documentary one… It is “Maundy Thursday”, a bright, outstanding work. No one of whom I know and whose works I have seen could somehow compete with that cinematographism in its finest sense and with that truth in its finest sense…” (Alexander Sokurov)
