It is distant and attractive, mysterious and religious. It is a country of football and coffee, Amazonia and Rio de Janeiro. Ask yourself honestly: How much do I know about Brazil? You’ll receive an answer – almost nothing. Brazilian Cinema Week gives you a rare opportunity to watch the brightest films of modern Brazil, to meet with leading film directors, actors and actresses as well as to learn more about culture and customs of that extremely amazing country.
For the first time Petersburg public got in touch with unknown exotic Brazilian cinematograph within the framework of LATINA FIESTA Film Festival, in May 2008. Then two Brazilian films were demonstrated: “Bossa Nova” by Bruno Barreto, the leading comedy film director in the country and “Broken April” by Walter Salles (Nominated for Gold Globe (USA, 2002), Prize for best filmmaking at Film Festival in Havana (Cuba, 2002), Nominated for Gold Lion at Venice Film Festival (Italy, 2002).
The first week of Brazilian national cinema started in Moscow last autumn. It received very warm reaction from the side of Moscow public. The best films of that program were selected for LATINA COSTA festival that took place in Saint-Petersburg in May 2009. Just here the names of Joao Moreira Salles, Sandra Kogut and Walter Salles were heard aloud.
A little time passed and we are ready to make a new step towards to Brazilian cinematograph. We’ll show the favourites of Brazilian modern film industry. The program includes a mini retrospective by Daniel Filho. The master will present his last works – comedy “If I Were You” and drama “Peace Time” personally. Tony Ramos, the leading actor of Brazilian films, is planning to make that not simple journey to Russia too. You can meet and talk with him at the opening evening.
Beside you can watch the most successful Brazilian film of last year. It is a drama “My Name Is Not Johnny” by Laura Lima. As well there are two excellent comedies, one of them is “Black Cash Desk” by beloved Bruno Barreto.
The odd panorama of Brazilian cinematograph is impossible without documental section. For public judgment there are new film “Moscow” by Eduardo Countinho and lyrical film about Nelson Freire by Joao Moreira Salles.
Welcome to the sunniest project of autumnal Petersburg. Watch new Brazil!
